There seems to be a trend in browser design and soon it should be coming to other apps you commonly use. The trend is tabs at the top of the window instead of under the address bar, just above the web page. Now apparently this trend began some years ago with the Opera browser. Never having use Opera, I wouldnt be able to say, but its the commonly accepted wisdom that that is where it began. I have tried to use browsers that put the tabs at the top, Chrome being the most notable. I have also Safari 4, when they used the “feature”. Apparently now, Firefox is now staged to bring this “feature” to their browser.
To justify this move, they’re throwing around all sorts of buzzwords like “evolution of the web” to explain why breaking years of design guidelines and user muscle memory is a good thing instead of the bass-ackward buzzword chasing that it is.
Basically, my take on it is this,
Tabs at the top of the windows is a horrible idea. It completely breaks years of usage, practice and muscle memory.
I don’t use Opera, never have. Hated tabs at the top in Safari before leaving the Mac, hate them in Chrome, and will not use them as long as I have an option to use something else.
The fact is that tabs simply belong at the top of the page they belong to, not at the top of the app. If there is anything in between the tab and the page it belongs to, the tabs are in the wrong place.
